Silene acaulis – Wallowa Mountains

Silene acaulis Wallowa population moss campion forms a dense, evergreen cushion 2” X 8” which seldom if ever flowers in cultivation.  There is some debate over whether it is actually an Arenaria species, not a big stretch, since both are members of the family Caryophyllaceae.  Grow in sun to part shade, gritty, sharply drained soil. Hardy to –30 degrees F. This selection is from the Wallowa mountains of eastern Oregon.
