Saxifraga x longifolia – wild seed

Saxifraga-longifolia-in-scree

Saxifraga x longifolia is a Pyrenean Saxifrage natural hybrid grown from wild seed collected in the Pyrenees Mountains.  We grew the silver leaved, encrusted seedlings for several years before they began producing a long panicle with dozens of cup-shaped white flowers.  As with the species, the main rosette then died but the offset rosettes live on.   Grow in cool sun or part shade among rocks, in scree bed or alpine house in sharply drained, moderately fertile soil. Native to the calcareous rocky slopes in the Pyrenees Mountains. Hardy to -10 degrees F. Saxifragaceae
