Pleione formasana is a lovely terrestrial orchid that is also known as Pleione pricei. It has bright green foliage and large, rosy-pink flowers with a white lip to 6″ high in spring. Grow in shade in humus rich soil that is kept moist in summer and drier in winter. It grows from small bulbs on the surface of the soil. After flowering, the old bulb withers and new bulbs are formed. Hardy to 15 degrees, it makes a good potted plant and can be kept quite dry during winter dormancy.
