Iris graminea

Iris graminea, the plum tart iris, is a charming small Spuria iris with brilliant purple flowers nestled within a fountain of narrow linear, glossy green leaves to 24″ tall.  Grow in sun to partial shade in well drained soil.  This iris is well suited to our West Coast climates as it requires moist spring and drier summer soils.  The foliage is deciduous and dies back completely in winter.  A native of Central and Southern Europe, it appears to be quite cold hardy and is reported to survive temperatures as low as -40 degrees F.  It would likely benefit from mulch in extreme cold climates.  Iridaceae
