Dierama pulcherrimum

Dierama pulcherrimum, fairy wand or angel’s fishing rod, is a striking plant looks like a large grass with its narrow, swordlike leaves. In mid-summer, graceful arching stems of bell-shaped pale to dark pink flowers appear. It takes plants time to become established and bloom in the garden. Mature specimens are 3 to 5 feet high. Worth the wait, it is simply stunning shimmering in the summer breeze.

Prefers full to part sun and well-drained soil. Thrives with regular water but has done well in our dry garden with no supplemental summer water. Generally evergreen, it may die back to the ground during extreme cold but grows back with vigor from its underground corms. Hardy to 0 degrees F. Native to the grasslands of South Africa.
