Codonopsis pilosula

Codonopsis pilosuli in garden

Codonopsis pilosula, known as Dang Shen or Tangshen, is an unusual deciduous vining perennial that can reach up to 5' high and is covered with small, cream colored bell-shaped flowers in summer. Grow in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy to 0 degrees F.  Found in moist streamsides and open woodlands in NE Asia and Korea Campanulaceae

This interesting plant is widely used in Chinese herbal medicine.   Called the Poor Man's Ginseng, it has a distinctly medicinal scent (some would call it skunky) when bruised.  When grown out of reach of hands and feet, as along our fenceline, the scent is not an issue.
