Begonia grandis ssp evansiana is a hardy begonia from China with fantastic claret-red color on the underside of the leaves. The above photo is taken showing the backlit undersides. It grows 18 to 24" tall x 18 to 24" wide and can spread to form a colony by dropping the small tubers that form in the leaf axils. It dies back to the ground with frost and emerges in late spring to flower in summer and into the fall. Grow in part to deep shade in fertile, moist soil. Fully cold hardy to -10 degrees F when grown in well-drained soil.
The Flora of China lists this species as Begonia grandis ssp grandis.
