Asarum caudatum, Western wild ginger is also known as long-tailed wild ginger.  It is an evergreen groundcoverhas beautiful heart-shaped leaves.  The unique maroon flowers peek out from beneath the leaf canopy.   Best grown in a shady location, in humous rich, well-drained soil with low fertilizer.  Commonly found in moist forest settings, it is also tolerant of low water situations once it is established.   The foliage and root has a spicy smell similar to culinary ginger when crushed.  Hardy to -20 degrees F.  Aristolochiaceae
