Eriogonum

Buckwheats are a large group of variable plants found in dry areas of Western North America. 

They have attractive, often fuzzy foliage and produce long lasting stalks of flowers

  Mat Buckwheat

 

Low silvery mats that produce thin flowering stems in summer that are topped by round flowerheads, emerging yellow and fading to red.  Grow in full sun in very well drained soil with low water.  Hardy to  –40 degrees F   Polygonaceae

 

Grown from seeds collected in the Pioneer Mtns of Idaho.  The species is native to the mountains of the Interior West.

  Kennedy's Buckwheat

 

Loose mat of narrow white, fuzzy leaves with long stems topped by white to pink flower clusters in summer.  Sun, very well drained soil, low water.  Hardy to  0 degrees F   Polygonaceae

 

Native to the San Bernadino Mountains and Mt Pinos Areas of  California where it grows on dry, gravelly slopes.

Flattened mats of white-woolly, oval leaves with balls of pink to ruby red flowerheads in summer.  4 x 20” Sun, low water, very well drained soil. –40 degrees F  From seed collected in Custer County, Idaho at 10K' in granite scree. Polygonaceae

Low mats of  fuzzy, spoon shaped leaves with umbels of pinkish flowers.  Sun, low water, very well drained soil.  Hardy to  –40 degrees F    Polygonaceae

 

 

From seed collected on Steen's mountain in Eastern Oregon.  This variety is found in rocky and sandy soils at high elevations in California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington and B.C.

Slow growing small-scale plant for containers and small rock garden.

From seed collected in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.  The species is commonly found in rocky and sandy soil at 3,000-9,000 feet in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho
